What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a SIM card that is built into your phone. There is nothing to put in, and nothing to lose.

The Basics

Plastic SIM or eSIM.

A physical SIM

  • A small plastic card
  • Goes in a tray on the side of the phone
  • Swapped by hand, and can be lost or damaged

An eSIM

  • A digital profile stored inside the phone
  • Added by scanning a QR code or typing in details
  • Works alongside your home SIM, so you keep both

Why Travellers Use One

Data Without the Shop Visit.

With a travel eSIM you buy a data plan before you go, install it at home on Wi-Fi and switch it on when you land. You use mobile data on a local network, rather than relying on your home plan’s roaming rates.

It is a data plan, not a new phone number. A TasESIM plan gives you mobile data. Calls and texts stay on your home SIM, and apps such as WhatsApp keep working on your usual number because they use data.

Good to Know

Three Things to Check.

  1. Your phone supports eSIM

Most recent phones do. Our phone check tells you in a minute.

  2. Your phone is unlocked

A phone locked to one provider cannot use another provider’s eSIM.

  3. You have Wi-Fi to install

The eSIM downloads over the internet, so install before you travel.
